This is one of the giant cranes that are built a Hunterston Pier, they are used for unloading coal 30 tons at a time. Hunterston is a deep water port, this means huge ships come here to be unloaded, the coal is stockpiled before being put back on smaller ships and being sent all around Europe. The cranes are mounted on tracks and move up and down the jetty.

If you dare, you can paddle under the jetty, gets a bit scary when the cranes are operating, but a great place to test your nerve if you go in the dark.
